Thanks, I had been confronted on about such a clean under the hood from "other places" ( not to mention any sites)in a not so nice way. I just accepted their comments & moved forward LOL. It is Nice to find someone who knows their stuff as you & can appreciate the authenticity ! When I was touring the derelict vehicles in farmers hedge rows & lost salvage yards (Looking for parts for my 50 jimmy) there were some vehicles that under the hood was clean to my surprise! Being it was protected from the elements it didn't fade quite as fast as ones exposed some not at all, Check out door jambs on old vehicles if you get the chance.. Then some were a mess. If you could see the motor in the 58, you would notice it was a greasey itself, After taking pictures one can see those Hmmm I missed something spots or Wow that worked out better then expected how'd that happen ?. Thank you for the Likes!

Hi gramps is there any chance that you could do so more pics of your 58 beater as Im planing on doing one soon with a 40's ford . Did you use hair spray to do the faded paint or some other method ? Those other people where narrow minded its obvious that under the hood is going to be cleaner and less rusty if its been kept out of the elements lol

The faded paint is a simple procedure anyone can do. I first paint the model with a primer color of my choice, Mine is normally Ruddy Brown primer. (Any thing close will do) After the primer coats are dry, I spray my color top coat on the model after that is cured I simply wet sand the areas with 1200 grit wet or dry (WET) to get my desired fading, one key leave some areas to where the color coat is still there but thinned to show the primer underneath. After that is dry I use a scuff pad aka "Scotch bright pad" found in stores along with the dish detergents section normally or an automotive paint store likely cheaper at the grocery store. Then, I lightly scuff the entire model to reduce the gloss from any paint. NOTE! When wet sanding or scuffing be aware of "scritching / scratching " sound that indicates a piece of matter is under your paper or scuff pad scratching the surface (it is unlike the normal sanding sound). you really don't want that effect. As far as rusted areas, Always do research on the make & model of the vehicle you are modeling to find out where the rust prone areas were on the particular vehicle. It adds to the authenticity to your finished product. I hope this short how to helps. If not just whistle !

Note, When vehicles are painted the normal spray pattern is from the front to the back. thus when paint fades away to the primer the heavily sprayed areas or over laps in the spray patterns will start to show notice the roof section of the 58, this should enlighten you. Knowing spray patterns does apply to this. Peeling paint is achieved from sea salt. Check out www.youtube.com enter in the search engine sea salt weathering as well as hair spray weathering you will find a treasure trove of information in video's there.
